Why proportion, construction, and material choice matter more than trends when designing work meant to last.
Trends move faster than construction schedules. A finish selected because it is fashionable will look dated well before the building around it needs attention—so we design against the calendar, not with it.
Longevity starts with proportion. A well-proportioned room survives changes in furniture, colour, and ownership because the bones are correct. Get the volumes, sightlines, and light right, and the space tolerates decades of different tenants and tastes.
From there, it is about specifying materials that are honest about what they are: solid timber over veneer where budget allows, natural stone over printed surfaces, hardware that can be serviced rather than replaced. None of it is exciting to describe, which is exactly why it lasts.
