Neutral does not mean plain. How tone, texture, and light do the work colour usually gets credit for.
A neutral palette asks more of every other decision. Without colour to lean on, texture has to carry the room—the grain of a timber floor, the nap of a boucle sofa, the honed versus polished finish on a stone slab.
Light becomes the other variable doing quiet work. The same putty-toned wall reads warm at 4pm and cool at 10am; a neutral scheme is really a study of how a room behaves across the day, not a single fixed choice.
Done well, it never feels plain—it feels edited. Every material left in the room earned its place because there was no colour to hide behind.
